Westside Warriors (BCHL) Name New Bench Boss

(Darren Yopyk addresses media and fans at Kelly O'Bryan's restaurant in West Kelowna. Yopyk is the Westside Warriors new Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations. Former bench boss Mark Howell looks on.)

There has been much speculation over the past few weeks as to who the Warriors would select to follow in the successes achieved by their first head coach, Mark Howell. On July 7, Darren Yopyk, 33, was introduced to the West Kelowna hockey community.

Yopyk, a native of St. Paul, Alberta, has strong NCAA ties based on a successful playing career at Princeton University. Most recently, he has spent the past four years coaching at Merrimack College. Full story is here.

Howell has moved on to CIS hockey, where he will head the University of Calgary program. While compling a .611 winning percentage with the Warriors over three seasons, Howell played a role in the graduation to NCAA hockey of 11 players and another seven to CIS. Two Warriors were drafted by NHL teams.

I'll have an extensive interview and feature on Mark Howell and his future plans in the coming days!
