Doan was reported to be the 93rd player to score 400 times in his NHL career.
Fast-forward two years and there are now 97 players in the 400-goal club, with Sidney Crosby, Marion Gaborik, Eric Staal and Joe Thornton achieving this milestone since Doan turned the trick.
Here's the most recent information I could muster on Dec. 16, 2018, along with the dates coinciding with their first season.
Updated @ Dec. 16, 2018
393 - Daniel Sedin (2000-01)
380 - Evgeni Malkin (2006-07)
366 - Corey Perry (2005-06)
363 - Steve Stamkos (2008-09)
361 - Tomas Vanek (2005-06)
358 - Jeff Carter (2005-06)
348 - Zach Parise (2005-06)
344 - Phil Kessel (2006-07)
337 - Henrik Zetterberg (2002-03)
337 - Joe Pavelski (2006-07)
329 - Jason Spezza (2002-03)
327 - Scott Hartnell (2000-01)
327 - Patrick Kane (2007-08)
308 - Jonathan Toews (2007-08)
But I also wonder how many of these players will be in the game long enough to reach the 400-goal milestone?
Sedin and Zetterberg are retired. How much gas do Perry, Vanek and Carter have in the tank? Does anyone see Spezza getting to 400?
There are a few other possibilities, but they have plenty of work to do. Also, a scan of these names really got me shaking my head because it's hard for me to fathom these young guys are all at least 11 seasons in to their respective NHL careers!
Place your bets everyone!
Who will be the 100th NHL player to reach the 400-goal plateau?
