The Future Looks Bright...

Last season, the Red Deer Rebels finished out of the WHL playoffs with a 25-37-1-9 record, good for only 60 points. The Rebs finished last among the five teams in the Central Division and 11th among the 12 Eastern Conference teams.

So, go figure! At the NHL Entry Draft, four members of the Rebels were selected. That is more than any other WHL team! And now there's more...

Forwards Cassidy Mappin and Willie Coetzee were NOT chosen, even though they were ranked by Central Scouting and the International Scouting Service. Yesterday, I received word from a prominent Detroit scout that Coetzee has been invited by the Red Wings to tryout at the annual rookie tournament in Traverse City Michigan.

Here's a list of the Rebels selected last month:

Landon Ferraro (2nd round...32nd overall: Detroit Red Wings)

Justin Weller (4th round...105th overall: Phoenix Coyotes)

Darcy Kuemper (5th round...161st overall: Minnesota Wild)

Tommi Kivisto (7th round...208th overall: Carolina Hurricanes)

Kivisto, it has been reported, is unlikely to return to Red Deer for the 2009-2010 season.
