Yes, I want Team Canada to win the gold medal!

It's always fun to prognosticate when this annual tournament takes place. For the third year in a row, the champion will be crowned on North American ice. It will be interesting to see if the Saddledome in Calgary is actually full if Team Canada does not qualify for the gold medal game.

Who will win the tournament? Do you believe in miracles?

GOLD: USA
(Speed, skill, size and more speed. Plus, head coach Dean Blais knows how to win this tournament in Canada)
SILVER: Russia
(Defending champs playing in Canada will galvanize the troops. Add in the high-end offensive skills, Russia could actually repeat)
BRONZE: Canada
(This age group played in a relegation game at the 2010 U18 Championship. Yikes! But the lunch bucket brigade could prove me wrong in Alberta)

4th: Sweden
5th: Finland
6th: Slovakia
7th: Czech Republic

2012 WJC & Other Thoughts...

It's a rite of passage of sorts, the annual World Junior Championship, also known as the World U20 Championship in International Ice Hockey Federation circles. Lots of interesting food for thought when this event hits the ice.

Two years ago at the 201 WJC, Team USA beat Team Canada in OT in the gold medal game at Saskatoon. At the same time, in Atlantic Canada, Team USA won the World U17 Challenge. At the WJC post-game press conference, I suggested to Team USA head coach Dean Blais that the two international titles won by Hockey USA teams on consecutive nights must bode well for their program, moving forward. His response; "Well, they're learning to win." So, my question right now is; How many of the players from the U17 championship team have remained with the Hockey USA program, and how many of those who have been "learning to win" will be in Alberta for the 2012 WJC? The answer; only TWO! They are goaltender John Gibson and forward J.T. Miller. To borrow a phrase from one of the best in the biz, Kelowna Rockets (WHL) play-by-play man Regan Bartel, this is something "that makes me go hmmmmmmm......"

Aaron Vickers, the Managing Editor of Future Considerations, provided outstanding coverage of the Hockey Canada Selection Camp in Calgary, for both FC and NHL.com. Calgary is home for Vickers, so the 2012 WJC will certainly result in his best coverage efforts. He is already touting Team Finland as a medal threat, based on their showing early in a 3-1 pre-tournament defeat at the hands of Team Canada. I'll take his word for it, but I am somewhat skeptical about the Finns offensive depth.

I will miss the "behind the scenes" media follies this year as the 2012 WJC is not on my radar. I'll watch the hockey from a distance with great interest though, knowing that the Canadian media en masse will be putting on an embarrassing display along the lines of "do you kow who I am"? Especially some of the veteran guys in the industry, clowns that I hope will soon just back away from their keyboards and the complimentary buffet tables. I won't miss being jostled from behind by ignorant, 350-pound paper-weights who lack the common decency to show just an ounce of consideration. Had I been working the 2012 WJC, I'd have arrived prepared with my laptop, voice recorder, and a pair of sharpened elbows looking for targets.

The city of Calgary will be on fire with great hockey at different levels for the next couple of weeks. The WJC is the headliner for sure, but Hockey Canada is introducing the World Sport School Challenge (WSSC) this month. It's a six-team, round-robin affair that wraps up on New Year's Eve, pitting three western Canadian "academy" teams and one from the USA against the Finland and Slovakia U17 national teams. The Finns and Slovaks are on the outside looking in this year as international teams are rotated at the World U17 Challenge, which will be played in Windsor, Ontario. So, the new WSSC will enable these two young teams to compete internationally this month. Pursuit of Excellence and the Okanagan Hockey Academy will be there. And by the way, don't forget the annual Mac's Midget Tournament in Calgary, a huge celebration of boys and girls hcokey.

I'm really pulling for Team Canada assistant coach Ryan Huska at the WJC. He's one of the good guys, determined, soft-spoken, polite and focused. A gold medal will go along very nicely with his 2009 WHL Championship (Kelowna Rockets), and the Memorial Cup hardware he earned as a player with the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. And also Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants...the diminutive one! He's a gritty kid who busts his ass to be the best. Gallagher is a great young player, an upbeat interview as well, a guy who I'm sure has already made a favourable impression with his Team Canada peers. If his work ethic becomes every players benchmark this month, I really like the team's chances.

Team Canada Lacking WHL Flavour...

The final roster has been announced for Team Canada at the 2012 World Junior Championship in Alberta.

Among the final cuts were a total of six WHL players, bringing the total number of 'Dub players released to 11. There were 16 invitees from WHL rosters. Of course, the league will "claim" Brett Connolly of the Tampa Bay Lighting as a WHLer, but the reality is that only five players currently playing in the WHL will be part of the Team Canada contingent in Alberta.

Cracking the roster are:
Mark Stone (Brandon Wheat Kings)
Mark Pysyk (Edmonton Oil Kings)
Quinton Howden (Moose Jaw Warriors)
Brendan Gallagher (Vancouver Giants)
Ryan Murray (Everett Silvertips)

Currently, Howden and Jonathan Huberdeau (QMJHL) are injured, but still were named to the roster. In the event they "can't go", look for Tyler Toffoli (OHL) and Ty Rattie (WHL) to get recalled.

Seven players have been released by Hockey Canada at the Selection Camp for the 2012 World Junior Championship.

Of the players released today, five are returning to WHL teams while the other two are heading back to their QMJHL teams.

Tanner Moar of the Kelowna Rockets

When the Kelowna Rockets make their annual December trek through Saskatchewan, a particular northern community is likely to supply some incremental game tickets revenue at a couple of Western Hockey League rinks.

Canwood’s Tanner Moar is a 17-year-old forward with the Rockets, playing in his first season of major junior hockey. By some accounts, the small Saskatchewan town has collectively marked an “X” or two on the WHL calendar. Kelowna plays in Prince Albert against the Raiders on Dec. 16, then in Saskatoon the next night against the Blades.

A defenceman turned forward...
Moar has been transformed from a defenceman to a forward. At 6’3 and 185 pounds, both Moar and the Rockets coaching staff hope can cut a wide swath across the ‘Dub in the coming years.

“He was a defenceman and he’s come in here trying to learn a new position,” explained head coach Ryan Huska. “That adds to some of the struggles for a young guy. But he’s had more on his plate because of that. He’s handled it very well and we see him continuing to get better over the course of the year and the next couple of years here.”

Moar, who was selected by the Rockets in the seventh round, 141st overall, at the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, has taken it all in stride, comfortable that he is being taught and developed by an organization he trusts.

“I feel like it’s been pretty easy, because I didn’t really know much about playing forward,” Moar shrugged. “I could just learn from scratch and learn what they teach me and focus on that.”

Among 17-year-old WHL forwards, Moar is, well, huge. For many of these youngsters, an early growth spurt can pose tremendous challenges, whether it be fatigue or just being viewed as an uncoordinated athlete. Thankfully, the people who are really in the know recognize the pitfalls and are prepared to exercise some patience.

“Sometimes people look at guys like Tanner and they maybe call them a project,” Huska said. “But they are in a growing stage where they don’t have that physical maturity in their body yet. Tanner is slight and you can tell he’s stretched out quite a bit over the last little while and it takes awhile for that coordination all to kind of get back in order again.

“Sometimes it may not look the prettiest, but there have been stretches where we have seen him skate in straight lines up the ice, and he can skate. Once he puts that package together and he understands how to handle his growth and he puts on some more weight, I think he’s going to be a good, solid, bigger player for us, and that’s important.”

Earning his stripes in the WHL...
For his part, Moar admits the transition from midget hockey to major junior can be a challenge in many ways. However, he feels confident he’s making progress on the ice, and he’s quick to give credit where he believes it is due.

“It hasn’t been super, super hard,” Moar said of the current learning curve. “That’s because the guys have been able to help me out and teach me things that help me even if I’m not as strong as the others. Things like just making sure that I focus on keeping my knees bent and my feet moving and keep trying to battle.”

Speaking of battles, part of his early education in the WHL came when he was forced to chuck knuckles in a tilt against Vancouver. He delivered a body check, then was taken to task by Giants’ Kiefer McNaughton, an 18-year-old who checks in at 6’3 and 210 pounds.

“The first fight was my first fight ever,” Moar smiled. “It was good for me to learn that I could do it and protect myself. I know I don’t have to be scared out there.”

In a late November game against the Victoria Royals, Moar opened the scoring for the Rockets in a 6-5 victory, banging home a rebound on a shot from another Saskatchewan product, defenceman Damon Severson from Melville. It was his first career WHL goal.

Then later that evening, the Royals’ 6’2, 195-pound forward Tim Traber came calling. Moar quickly responded, accommodating one of the western conference’s grittiest agitators. With his second WHL bout and first goal in the books, Moar finished the night just an assist shy of a Gordie Howe hat trick.

“The goal was just another boost of confidence,” Moar said. “I hope I can keep getting points and keep helping out the team as much as I can.”

A coach's take on the player's development...
Huska, who played in the Phoenix Coyotes system briefly with Canwood’s own Tavis Hansen, will leave the Rockets in mid-December and attend to duties as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the World Junior Championship in Alberta. He is building a solid coaching resume, which should bode well for Moar in the long run. To date, Huska likes what he sees.

“I don’t want to say he’s had a tough start, but he’s had the kind of start that most young guys do have,” Huska said. “He’s found himself in the lineup, then missing a couple of games in row early in the season. But over the last five games, he’s been consistently in our lineup and has been improving every game. That’s what we want to see as a coach.

“He’s a positive guys around our dressing room and if there’s one thing we can say about Tanner is that he is very coachable. If you ask him to go to the net, he’s going to go to the net. If you ask him to finish his checks, he’s going to try to finish every one of his checks. So, I think with time he can turn himself into a good player for us. He has a great attitude about the game and that can go a long way.”

The importance of family...
Away from the rink, Moar is becoming used to life away from Canwood.

“It’s been a lot different,” Moar said. “I’m used to knowing every single person in my town and being able to talk with them. Here in Kelowna, they might know me, but I might not know who they are. So it is a lot different going from small town to city life. It’s totally different. Like driving, and just the way people look at everything.”

Life in a small town was good to Moar, the youngest of four children. His father Ken, known in the area as a very good athlete, has been an important part of Tanner’s development, especially the move to Kelowna.

“He’s been very supportive, since I began skating he was always taking me to the rink, whether it was public skating or a game or practice, he’d be pushing me. Even if I made one little mistake, he’d lean on me and tell me how to work it up and get going.

“Being out here (in Kelowna), well, he’s had three kids go through it (living away from home), so he wasn’t a heartbroken parent, but he knew he had to keep me motivated and made sure I wasn’t missing home. He’s helped me to make sure I was focusing on hockey.”

A father speaks...
While Tanner works hard at school and on the ice in Kelowna and other WHL cities, Ken Moar makes his daily commute from Canwood to work in Blaine Lake. Tanner’s father will also hit the road for Prince Albert and Saskatoon when the Rockets come calling, although there is no truth to the rumour that he’s renting a bus for the occasion.

“Well, no,” Moar laughed. “We’re only about 40 minutes from P.A., but the whole town is pretty excited about it. We’ve heard from a lot of people, people we didn’t even realize, who have been paying a lot of attention to what Tanner’s doing. It’s been pretty exciting for everybody.”

Coincidentally Ken says, he also coached Tavis Hansen in minor hockey. And recently, Ken was able to travel to Montreal and watch his nephew Chris Kunitz playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Canadiens. He says that Canwood is very much a hockey community, yet the town hasn’t really had a homegrown player move on to the WHL since Hansen toiled in Rockets organization, albeit while the team was in Tacoma, Washington.

These days, it’s Tanner Moar carrying the "Canwood" name across the map of junior hockey. Of his son’s move from the blueline to a forward position, his father agrees there will be some challenges to start.

“Yeh, the learning curve is pretty steep. I think he’s still enjoying himself and he wants to play hockey. He did play some forward early on, growing up in small town Saskatchewan when quite often you might only have nine players, you kind of learn to play wherever the puck goes.”

And of course, the question begs for a hockey parent in Moar’s situation; what’s it like to see your 17-year-old son leave home to play hockey?

“Well, Tanner is the youngest of four here,” Ken said. “We understood that when you live in a small town in northern Saskatchewan, if the kids want to pursue their dreams, they might have to move away from home to do it.

“We just tried to prepare him the best we could to be ready for whatever he has to do.”

One of the Western Hockey League's most engaging personalities is Cam Moon of the Red Deer Rebels. "Mooner" is the energetic, consummate professional who handles play-by-play duties for the Rebs, among his myriad of responsibilities with the central Alberta-based team.

We spoke with Moon in Kelowna, touching on the development of a handful of prospects currently on the Rebels roster including Matt Dumba (2012), Alex Petrovic (Florida Panthers), Justin Weller (Phoenix Coyotes) and John Persson (New York Islanders).

Moon also lent some perspective on just how fortunate Red Deer and area hockey fans were to have watched the development of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers over the past couple of years.

NEUTRAL ICE...October 31, 2011

Coming Home...Bulmer returning to Kelowna. Great move for the player and the team. Now, if PG can get Connolly back, and Portland gets Johansen back, all will be good. The stars in junior hockey need to be playing junior hockey where they are in very responsible roles. These three will develop big time if they come back and play 25 minutes per game. And the fans win, too.

The Puck Stops Here...Gotta give the Tri City Americans credit, giving 16-year-old goalie Eric Comrie the starting nod. Already a POW award winner after back-to-back shutouts a couple of weekend ago. And don't forget, their backup is Ty Rimmer...a journeyman of sorts who was a 15th round pick in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft.

Please, A Balanced Schedule...Sure would like to see the powers-that-be come up with a way for the fans to see every WHL team each season. Sure, dollars are probably an issue. And, I doubt the city of Portland gets excited about hosting the Prince Albert Raiders. In the US Division, the teams play each other 12 times! That's 48 of 72 regular season games played within the division!

Does Size Matter...Gotta like Brendan Gallagher's start. He's been effective ever since he entered the league, playing bigger than his 5'8, 175-pound frame. If healthy, he should break the Vancouver Giants career scoring record sometime in February.

Kamloops Blazin'...With an 11-3 start so far, the veteran-laden crew has been a surprise, but generally only to those who did not do their research. With 16 returnees from last season, their forward group is deep and their backend is huge. They might still shop for a goaltender. The addition of former Moose Jaw Warriors head coach Dave Hunchak has been a huge plus as an assistant to head coach Guy Charron. I'm convinced Hunchak is bridging the communication gap between the players and the 63-year-old Charron.

Is Beyak "the guy" in Winnipeg?

Sources are suggesting that Dennis Beyak will handle the play-by-play call for the Winnipeg Jets this season on TSN television broadcasts. There might also be some radio work involved.

Combine his extensive WHL management and broadcasting background, along with his recent NHL broadcasting reponsibilities in the Toronto market, and Beyak would be a good pick for this position.

Given he is Manitoba-born and raised, well, that makes him a great pick!

August 25: Finally a report on this! When he walked into my office last week to say good-bye for 2011, I was ecstatic! Passed over by the Edmonton Oilers last season when they chose to baffle Canadians by hiring an American voice, Beyak will be awesome in Winnipeg. And I hope this is a "retirement" contract for him...a good guy in his 50's who has busted his ass in an industry that doesn't always treat the good guys in a way they deserve to be treated. A "prophetic", but unpublished account...

Back in 2009, I played The Rise Golf Club at Vernon for the first time with three friends from Kelowna. I penned the following article, a review of the golf course.

At the time, my publisher at Inside Golf Magazine refused to print the story. In fact, it never did see the light of day. The concern was that it was too negative.

Sure, that perception offended me, but admittedly I have never walked a day in the shoes of a publisher. These are the people who have to balance content with advertising in an effort to maintain profitability. I get that, but over the years I have read too many cream-puff, polyana-ish golf course reviews. It is not in my DNA to write that kind of drivel.

Today, a couple of years after the fact, my dreams for the layout at The Rise Golf Club have come true. The powers-that-be have been able to soften some of the really hard edges and they have now been experimenting with making the back nine their outward nine. Kudos to golf shop professionals Lee Ranger and Jeff Wills for championing the switch.

On Top of the World...
A trip up to The Rise Golf Club takes you on a leisurely, winding drive through Vernon’s newest, awe-inspiring residential development. Be assured that navigating the route is not an impossible mission, just one that should be approached with patience, and appreciation for the sheer size of the property.

Upon your arrival at the golf course, there may be a distinct feeling that you’ve actually arrived at the top of the world. In fact, you’ll be high above the burgeoning Okanagan Valley, readying yourself for one of the region’s most stout tests of golf.

At The Rise, designed by PGA Tour professional Fred Couples and architect Gene Bates, be prepared to absorb the soothing ebb and flow provided by your tour of a parcel of land that truly illustrates all that makes the Okanagan Valley one of the most beautiful regions on the planet.

The tee boxes and putting surfaces are absolutely perfect. Couples and Bates have incorporated square teeing grounds, a feature somewhat unique to the Okanagan Valley. Native fescue surrounds each tee box, an “easy-on-the-eyes” aesthetic you cannot help but enjoy. If you take the time to look back from green to tee whenever you can, the visual impact of the four-cornered tee box design is a feature to marvel at.

From a pure golf perspective, prepare yourself for at least one certainty during your initial foray to The Rise. Bring mucho ammunition! The fescue and underbrush off of the fairways on the front nine will devour wayward golf balls.

The Front Nine...
The opening hole allows you to bang your driver, which really is what most of us want these days. The fairway is wide and inviting, yet your approach shot will be threatened by a crafty rock feature surrounding the front left side of the green.

The next 30 minutes of your day will likely include negotiating a pair of the most demanding par 4’s in the entire Okanagan Valley. Both holes play uphill. Uneven fairway lies await, presenting an enormous challenge. By the time you reach the third green, you’ll clearly understand why power carts are a mandatory proposition at The Rise.

The shortish fourth hole offers a brief respite, along with a view of Okanagan Lake that many people will likely be experiencing for the first time. The northwest arm of the lake is visible, winding past Parker’s Cove on the west side and all the way up to Spallumcheen. To suggest it is spectacular would most certainly qualify as an understatement.

The fifth hole will require you to muster every ounce of patience, as the landing area on the sharp dogleg cannot be seen. Straight ball flight is the only option here, yet an accurate carry yardage may be difficult to ascertain. From the corner, should you arrive there safely, a downhill approach shot is played to a large, inviting green that slopes significantly from back to front.

At the sixth, a swirling mountain breeze can make the downhill par 3 a most challenging club-selection battle. Destined to be one of the signature holes at The Rise, it is worth taking the time to appreciate the work required to build this dramatic par-3.

From the seventh tee to the ninth green, the golf course begins to open up as you recognize you are escaping the confines of a well-treed front side. This is where I felt the true comfort beginning at The Rise, as the expansive views of the back nine and surrounding vistas become apparent.

The Back Nine...
The par-4 tenth hole will not beat anyone up with its length. However, plenty of golf balls will inevitably be rinsed in the water hazard along the right side of the fairway. The fairway is wide and everything about the hole is right in front of your eyes. In my opinion, I truly believe this could one day play as the first hole at The Rise. More on this later.

After the nifty 11th hole, which is the first of a trio of par 3’s on the inward nine, you are greeted at the 12th tee by the realization that links golf does in fact exist at The Rise. It comes in form of a three-hole stretch that allows you to let out the driver shaft a couple of times. Sandwiched between the 12th and 14th is the par-3 13th hole, with a Tetris-like, interlocking tee box design.

The 15th and 16th holes wind around a small lake, one that will eventually fill up with an equal representation of every golf ball manufacturer’s product. The wooden bridge along the right side of the par-3 16th is a wonderful testament to the creativity of the architect and the novel workmanship of the builder. This is truly a section of the golf course worthy of photo opportunities.

The home holes seem to have been designed to ensure you leave The Rise with a burned-in image of Okanagan Lake, the city of Vernon and a glimpse of Highway 97. Each hole plays significantly downhill, guaranteeing an inflated yardage for those who strike their tee shots solidly. If you are playing purely for the fun of it, the 17th and 18th holes provide a perfect opportunity to tee it up from the back tees. These, appropriately, are referred to as the “Boom-Boom” tees.

Food for Thought...
If there were a piece of advice I can offer visitors to The Rise, it would be to make a commitment to play the golf course at least twice. The first time is likely to induce some frustration, as not all of your well-struck golf shots are likely to be kindly rewarded. During your subsequent visits, I can absolutely guarantee that due to your first experience, you will play a few shots differently.

I also wonder if the powers-that-be might experiment with an occasional 10th tee start, and then obtain some feedback from the golfing public. Currently, holes one, two and three can make for a very difficult start. This stretch could potentially play as holes 10 through 12 if the current back nine was played first from time to time. In this case, players would then have a few swings under their belt by the time they arrive at perhaps the most demanding stretch of holes in the region.

Alas, these will be decisions made in part by the competent golf operations team at The Rise, including general manager Terry Yacyshen and head professional Lee Ranger. The pair brings extensive industry experience to the facility and make for a formidable team. The Rise has also joined the Okanagan Golf Alliance, a group that includes Gallagher’s Canyon, Predator Ridge, the Okanagan Golf Club and the Harvest Club. The group effectively promotes the entire Okanagan Valley by packaging golf and accommodation.

I, for one, will definitely play The Rise on more than one occasion. My first trip around the layout was reminiscent of my initial experience at Predator Ridge when it opened for business over a decade ago. The Rise can be a tough and narly golf course, but it is certain to be softened over time and with some tender loving care. It’s an amazing setting, one I hope will be destined for success and a place among the very best the Okanagan Valley has to offer. Indeed, it’s well worth the trip to play The Rise.

Should you accept this mission, The Rise may very well become a permanent fixture on your dance card.

Kelowna Minor Hockey Association Success Stories...

We spoke with KMHA Head Coach Trevor Erhardt at the Capital News Centre during the Showcase of Champions division finals. The recreational division playoff format is a new initiative this season, with kudos to Corrine Reid, KMHA's director of hockey operations working hard to pull it all together.

Erhardt spoke about his involvement with KMHA and the positive feedback the coaching initiatives have received over the past three seasons. Also, the KMHA Rep programs have achieved some success so far this season, with seven teams heading to provincial championship tournament this month.

And earlier this season, Erhardt returned to Europe where he was honoured by the Frankfurt Lions of the German Hockey League, where he played professionally during the 1980's and 1990's. His jersey was retired by the team in 1999.

It's always fun to escape for a weekend and enjoy the festivities in Las Vegas, whether it's a show or two, a couple rounds of golf, gaming, or just good old-fashioned people watching. Indeed, Vegas has it all!

A Not-So-Shocking "Shocker"...

Of course it scared the hell out of me!

Yeh, I'm talking about that 3-0 Team Canada lead after 40 minutes. I was uneasy because I'd seen it before from many of these plucky Russians.

And I feel pretty confident I can guarantee that the Russian coaching staff didn't necessarily feel completely out of the game during the second intermission last night. They'd been there before, recently in fact, and had seen their troops put together an awe-inspiring, game-winning rally.

In November, when the Russian side touring across Canada stopped in Kamloops during the Subway Super Series, it was apparent the group was a different lot than what we'd seen over here during the past decade. By overcoming a pair of three-goal deficits against Team WHL, then winning in a shootout, the Russians served notice of intestinal fortitude we have not seen from them in many years.

After that leg of the tour swung through British Columbia, the Russians took 15 players from that group and named them to their WJC roster. Then they added at least four more key players to the mix, including defenseman Dmitri Orlov, forwards Vlad Tarasenko, Evgeni Kusnetsov and goaltender Igor Bobkov. They entered the WJC on the receiving end of little fanfare (or respect) and promptly lost their first two games against powerful entries from Canada and Sweden.

Five straight wins later and they're heading home (albeit delayed) with gold medals. And in case there is any notion that they do not deserve the gold, just remember that they posted redemption-type victories over the teams they'd lost to earlier on in the competition.

Surprisingly, none of the media types at TSN who have done a masterful job in producing the WJC "television edition", chose to recount the events in Kamloops just a few short weeks ago. Perhaps if the two three-goal comebacks had occured right in front of them in the eastern standard time zone, there might have been a recollection voiced at some point during the WJC. These guys have proven for years that they do all of the requisite homework, yet this little tidbit of probable Russian "self-belief" may have managed to evade them this time around.

So we'll hear the National Junior Team get bashed a bit on this one, perhaps rightfully so. But occasionally in the wacky world of sports, our favorite teams just get beat! In reality, the so-called worst collapse by a Canadian team in WJC history had much, much more to do with the the determined effort put forth by a group of 19-year-old Russians.

If you're a human being, you absolutely cannot deny that watching the joy on the faces of the Russian kids was an eye-opener to how meanigful this victory really is. Sure, that celebration kind of grated on me, but maybe it's the parent in me that quickly figured out these are just a bunch of kids who produced their own version of a Russian miracle on American ice. (Um, does that sound vaguely familiar?)

If you are a Canadian hockey fan, like me, you have every right to examine the reasons why our guys could not put together a solid third period. And today, you'll hear about some questionable off-ice behaviour by the Russians last evening that will probably irritate you as well. But, even that cannot change what we all witnessed on the ice last night.

For my money though, the answer is simple. It was the Russians who took the initiative to make sure our guys couldn't get it done. They were better than us when they had to be. And really, as a hockey fan, I think that's okay. And, as far as the comeback goes, it was less of surprise to me because I'd seen it before lately.

Twice.

Alas, the 2012 WJC is only 12 months away.

2011 WJC: Canada vs Russia...

A Long History...

Yet another installment of the true international hockey rivalry is set for Buffalo, New York tomorrow night when Russia takes on Team Canada in the gold medal game.

I've been a fan of the rivalry since 1972, a mere 38 years ago, when I stood in the hallway at Georges Vanier Elementary School in Saskatoon and watched the final game of the Super Series with my classmates. There have been many great sporting moments supplied by these two hockey powers over the years, at both the professional and amateur level. (Of course, some may want to debate where amateurs and professionals fit in the grand scheme of things, but that's another conversation entirely.)

Tomorrow, the teams will face off in front of a wildly pro-Canadian crowd at HSBC Arena. The officiating crew has been named. It includes a Czech and American referee along with a German and American linesman. Is this relevant? Probably not, but Canada/Russia hockey history shows there was a time when it might have mattered.

Team Canada has proven itself to be a forechecking monster at this WJC, with its only blemish being a preliminary round shootout loss to Sweden. The Russians lost their first two preliminary round games, to Canada and to Sweden, and have won four straight since. Subsequently, the 2011 gold medal winning team will not sport an undefeated record.

While I am wholeheartedly cheering for Team Canada, I have had some experience of late with this current group from Russia. And I believe there is reason for some trepidation as Canada looks to reclaim the tournament championship it lost at this event last year.

The 2010 Subway Super Series...

When the Russians journeyed through British Columbia last November for a two-game set against Team WHL in the annual Subway Super Series, the team had already won a pair of games against the QMJHL. They lost both games to the OHL, although the first decision required a shootout. Team WHL was charged with having to win both games to secure the series victory, something that had become a foregone conclusion over the past seven editions of the competition.

In Kamloops, I watched the Russians practice during the morning on gameday. They were loose as a group and it was evident the coaching staff was comfortable with the players enjoying themselves. They worked diligently on offensive zone attack drills and specialty team positioning. I was especially interested in how they worked to to keep pucks in at the blueline and how quickly the Russian defensemen were getting accurate shots off from the point.

That night, when Team WHL scored three times during the first eight minutes of the game, I could see and hear the collective smirks from the crowd at the Interior Savings Centre. Pandamonium of sorts, actually. Indeed, it was another blowout in the making, wasn't it?

Well, the Russians certainly didn't see it that way. Before long, the gap was narrowed to 3-2. And then, with just ten minutes to play, Team WHL was in front by a count of 6-3. It appeared that all was good at the ISC. But again, the Russians didn't cooperate. They struck for three quick goals to tie the game, 6-6, and could very likely have won in regulation time. The series rules of competition did not allow for overtime, so the teams went straight to the shootout. Five shots each and the Russians didn't have to use their last shooter. Game over. Russia 7, Team WHL 6.

Had Team WHL won in that fashion, I suspect we'd have been told by the media hordes that the victory was a "character builder", testimony to the heart and soul of Canadian hockey players.

The next night, the Russians walked into the CN Centre in Prince George and defeated Team WHL by a score of 5-2, winning the Subway Super Series for the first time. Methinks many hockey fans may have forgotten this result.

The 2011 WJC Playoff Round...

There was something eerily familiar about the Russians' win over Finland. They overcame a two-goal deficit, scoring twice in the final four minutes before winning in overtime by a 4-3 count. A "character builder" perhaps?

And then against Sweden, they gave up a two-goal lead, only to battle back and score late to tie the game at 3-3. It was as if overtime was academic, the Russia prevailed in the shootout. Again, a "character builder" perhaps?

The 2011 WJC Final...

When the puck is dropped at the WJC tomorrow, no less than 15 players from that successful Russian side will be in uniform in Buffalo. The team that ripped through British Columbia in November showed determination, grit, skill and persistence. At Kamloops, they stole victory from the jaws of defeat, overcoming a pair of three-goal deficits. A "character builder", perhaps?

In addition to the group that was successful in dispatching Team WHL, the Russians have added three difference makers in defenceman Dmitri Orlov, along with forwards Vladamir Tarasenko and Yevgeni Kuznetsov.

What scares me about the gold medal game is this Russian team appears to really believe in itself. There is emotion and fight that I generally haven't seen in the past. There always has been high-end skill among the Russians, but seldom has it appeared to me that the teams are having fun pulling together.

Team Canada...

There is absolutely no way the Canadians will under-estimate the Russians. There will be pressure, of course, but the coaching staff has demonstrated its ability to plan their work and then work their plan. The players are a hard-working bunch, tenacious on the forecheck. They have been as disciplined a Canadian team as we have seen at a WJC in some time.

There has been a consistent WHL flavour with this current group as well. And therein may lie the ultimate advantage.

During that Subway Super Series loss in November at Kamloops, Jared Cowen, Curtis Hamilton, Quinton Howden and Carter Ashton were in the lineup for Team WHL. Cody Eakin, Ryan Johansen and Tyson Barrie were in the building, but did not dress. The trio suited up, along with Brett Connolly, the next night in Prince George. That's eight WHLers who felt the sting from this current Russian group.

And I just don't see it happening again.

He Didn't HaveTo Hit Him...

After spending most of the past decade among media wags or on the ice as an official, I have become even more frustrated with hockey fans than I was as a player many moons ago. There is no doubt in my mind that the loyalty and support of hockey fans in this country is admirable, likely beyond what other countries experience.

But, we sure do turn on the lunacy when things do not go our way.

The Zach Kassian hit on a Czech Republic player at the 2011 World Junior Championship has resulted in a bizarre and emotional response from fans and media alike. The criticism of on-ice officials and then tournament officials in light of Kassian's two-game suspension has been nauseating.

The bottom line is this: He Didn't Have to Hit Him!

Watch the beginning of the video here (yes, it's in French). Then just think about my statement with an open mind, if you can, for about ten seconds.

End of story, right?

Good times in Penticton where five NHL teams took part in a tournament that captivated the South Okanagan this past week. Hosted by the Vancouver Canucks, the tournament included the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks.

Canucks Camp In Penticton...

The Vancouver Canucks announced a few weeks ago that they will set up shop in Penticton during September. The South Okanagan Events Centre will host the NHL team's Young Stars tournament and also its main training camp.

I spoke with Laurence Gilman today. He's the Canucks VP of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager. Gilman explained the Canucks' approach in taking training camp "on the road" throughout British Columbia and shed some light on a few of the off-season roster moves.

If the small town of St. Andrews in Scotland has become a circus of sorts this week during the 2010 British Open, we may have located one of the clowns!

Hey, just kidding!

Gord McGarva sent us this photo, confirming he is in fact on the planet these days. We haven't seen him since he left the Okanagan Valley a few weeks ago. A member of the Kelowna G&CC, golf coach at Mount Boucherie High School and radio analyst for the WHL's Kelowna Rockets broadcasts, McGarva is a busy lad these days, toting golf bags in Scotland.

WHL Prospects for 2010 NHL Entry Draft...

It was difficult to rank Brett Connolly of the Prince George Cougars as the top WHL prospect, but you just have to hope the kid's hip flexor problems are history. He is a tremendous talent.

The Portland Winterhawks could see between four and six players selected, which bodes well for the club and its WHL Championship aspirations next season.

Of note for Kelowna area hockey fans is Curtis Hamilton of the Saskatoon Blades, a local product who is likely to hear his name called. I have him ranked #13 among WHLers. It was a short 33 years ago that his father Bruce was selected by the St. Louis Blues.

Of the eligible Kelowna Rockets, Brett Bulmer looks to be the best bet to catch a draft this June. There is also a slight chance a NHL team could spend a late-round pick on forward Geordie Wudrick, a 2008 third-round selection of the Los Angeles Kings who was not able to secure a contract and went unsigned at the June 1 deadline.

There is also a great piece here by Adam Kimelman of NHL.com, a Philadelphia-based writer I got to know in Saskatoon at the 2010 World Junior Championship. Adam has penned a feature on defenceman Austin Madaisky of the Kamloops Blazers (#15 in my HF Ranking). Kimelman also featured defenceman Alex Petrovic of the Red Deer Rebels (#9 in my HF Ranking) a couple of weeks ago. That piece is right here.

Round one of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft takes place on June 24. Rounds two through seven are set for June 25. The festivities take place in Los Angeles. TSN will provide live coverage of the the round one proceedings. The Edmonton Oilers have the first pick overall.

So You Want to Live on a Golf Course...

It isn’t difficult to recognize why golf course living appears to be appealing. The well-maintained green space enhances the beauty of any mountain or lake view. If you play the game, proximity to the links is a tremendous convenience.

Really, what’s not to like?

Well, according to many a disgruntled golf course area dweller, there’s plenty.

If you believe what many realtors frequently espouse regarding the positive aspects and home value impact for property bordering a golf course, you probably have not experienced any of the negatives.

Yes, you might occasionally find a golf ball or two in your backyard, after it has bounced off of your house or broken a window. Because it is extremely difficult for the majority of people playing the game to make their own golf ball behave, property bordering a golf course will generally be littered with poorly struck Titleists. And yes, these projectiles are capable of inflicting serious property damage or personal injury. There is also the likelihood that the golfer in question will feel compelled to trespass on to your property to recover the golf ball.

Yes, you can expect the sound of a lawnmower to pierce the early morning peace and quiet on a daily basis. The very same green space you enjoy viewing requires significant, regular maintenance. And, because the golf course is actually a business, the maintenance occurs early in the day so as to allow the paying public an opportunity to enjoy their golf experience to the fullest. Indeed, be prepared to feel the noise.

Yes, there are people who play golf that can aptly be referred to as buffoons. These clowns will not hesitate to curse loudly at their own ineptitude, eliciting vulgarities that will likely offend those attending your child’s backyard birthday party or that barbeque with your family members. For certain, the loudmouthed filth exists and many of them play golf sans the concept of good manners. They are a small but noticeable percentage of those who play golf. So, get used to it. And remember, modern day society seems to have made an ill-conceived habit of blaming the "booze", not the "boozer".

With the intention of being a good neighbor, most golf courses will do everything they can to build good will with those living in close proximity. Endeavoring to educate customers is a daily exercise. Golf course set-up is a regular practice, positioning tee boxes in manner that should encourage golfers to aim away from bordering property. Attempting to bring together parties when an incident occurs is yet another effort most facilities will undertake. Many community developers will ensure homes are built far enough away from the playing areas to limit or completely avoid intrusion. Unfortunately, just as many developers do not.

Yet the real crux of the matter creates one burning question: whose fault is it when property damage or personal injury is incurred?

Because our society has become so litigious over the past couple of decades, it almost seems as though personal responsibility must be proven rather than accepted. Old-school maturity and simple logic would suggest that if I hit a golf ball that flies off the course and breaks a patio door window, it is I who caused the damage to occur. This seems to be pretty black and white to me.

However, there are probably a million legal minds in our society (I think their peers call them “learned friends”) who would debate this, electing to become involved to assist a client in finding a legal basis to get “off the hook” or, er, slice? (This would seem to be more about fees than it is about justice, but that is another topic for another day.)

What I cannot bend my brain around is the notion that a person would rather cough up $250 to have a lawyer defend their bad golf, instead of handing over the cash to the person whose property has been damaged? But, I digress…

Ultimately, many people can look beyond the inconveniences and enjoy the upside of golf course living. But many people simply refuse to accept the realities. It continues to baffle me when someone who chooses to build a home next to a golf course immediately begins to complain about the things they had plenty of time to research in advance. And then, come time to sell the property, these same bellyachers will shamelessly speak to prospective buyers about all of the positives in an effort to secure the most revenue they can. The hypocrisy is nauseating.

There is a simple solution to the problem, a suggestion we have all heard many, many times over the years. And that is, “Buyer Beware”.

How The World of Golf Has Changed...

The current world of recreational golf in the new millennium brings with it many consumer interactions that range from the sublime to the ridiculous. In reality, it has become a paradise of sorts for anyone with the inkling to consider using smart-alec responses.

Alas, the snarky one-liners are never an appropriate response because the focus in the industry is to find ways to accommodate the customer and educate at the same time. But, there are always those on the consumer’s side of the counter who have no desire to be educated. These are the people who can make the business a challenging proposition.

Here's a bit of fun, a real-life example from the occasionally baffling world of golf in the Okanagan Valley.

Situation…
A gentleman arrives in the golf shop to play golf. He is wearing blue jeans and a dress shirt that has obviously had the sleeves torn off at the shoulders. All of the shirt’s buttons are undone. His entire upper body and his arms are covered by tattoos. He is wearing large steel rings on the fingers on each hand. His cap is being worn backwards. He is carrying a case of beer. There are other patrons in the golf shop, including a couple of ladies.

The Dialogue…
Gentleman: “I have a tee time around one-o’clock with my buddies. I don’t think they’re here yet.”
Golf Shop: “Okay. Let’s get you checked in. However, we will require you to wear proper golf attire here. Do you happen to have a golf shirt with you?”
Gentleman: “What do you mean? I’m wearing $12,000 worth of artwork here?”
Golf Shop: “Sir, please. We’d appreciate if you would wear a golf shirt with sleeves and a collar at our facility. Do you happen to have one in your vehicle?”
Gentleman: “That’s bullshit!”
Golf Shop: “Okay, sir. I can help you find a shirt.”
Gentleman: “I’m already spending $75 to play your golf course. And now you want me to buy a shirt? That’s just bullshit!”
Golf Shop: “Well sir, I can find you a shirt, one that you can use today. There will be no charge. And I have to ask you to refrain from cursing in here.”
Gentleman (throws his credit card on the counter): “Well you’re pissin’ me off. Just get me a shirt so I can get outa here.”
Golf Shop (swiping the credit card through the machine): “Sure. If you would enter your PIN number here, we’ll get rolling. And by the way, we’ll have to ask you to return the alcohol to your vehicle. We have a restaurant upstairs and a beverage cart on the golf course if you’d like a beer or two today.”
Gentleman: “You mean I can’t bring this out there with me?”
Golf Shop: “That’s correct, sir.”
Gentleman (while walking away from the counter with a borrowed golf shirt and his credit card receipt): “Geezuz, what’s up with this fuckin’ place?”

The Resolution…
The facility wins because the employee in the golf shop maintained his composure and represented the club in a professional manner. The downside is the potential for the gentleman and his friends to become more of a problem while on the golf course. In this case, most facilities just kind of cross their fingers and hope for the best.

What You Would Really Like To Say This Customer:
“Sir, I cannot comment on the folly of your $12,000 investment, but it’s just not a look that is going to work for you here. Did it ever occur to you today to simply dress like you give a damn? And you’ll have to lose the beer. Or, you can simply leave the premises. And don’t let the door hit your ass on your way out.”

Epilogue…
Of course, the customer service nature of the golf industry these days pretty much commands that employees must bite their tongue from time to time when unruly consumers choose to vent their spleen. It’s definitely a bad deal, but revenue is so frequently the bottom line in an industry that is seemingly on life support in so many ways.

And so, many of us who work in the industry these days simply deal with the crap in the best way we know how. For those of us in our 30’s and 40’s who grew up with the traditions and behavioral expectations associated with the game, the antics of many consumers are actually quite disappointing. It’s just not something many of us witnessed very often during our formative years.

Indeed, behavior and attitudes have changed in our society, so there is no way for the golf industry to fully escape the stupidity and boorishness of people who choose to object to any and all forms of what use to be referred to as “common sense”. And it's also really hard to say if there are any real concrete answers out there as to how to stem the tide of this nastiness?

I suppose only time will tell.

NHL Scouting Combine Has WHL Flavour...

The list of 100 players invited to the annual NHL Scouting Combine has been released. The festivities, which include workouts and interviews for NHL prospects, run from May 24 to May 29.

A total of 14 WHL teams will be represented. Portland leads the way with four invitees, all of whom are expected to be back with the Winterhawks next season. The Moose Jaw Warriors have three invitees and a host of teams are sending a pair of players to the Combine.

There are 10 forwards invited, along with four goaltenders and eight defencemen.

Gone From Kelowna, But Not Forgotten...

Last year at this time the city of Kelowna was abuzz with hopes for a lengthy playoff run. The trade deadlines deals orchestrated by Bruce Hamilton were beginning to show signs of bearing fruit. There was a veteran presence in the Rockets dressing room, offensive firepower among the forwards, and a hint that the group was elevating its collective game.

Of course, WHL fans remember that exciting evening in early May when the Rockets won an overtime thriller over the Calgary Hitmen at Prospera Place, claiming a league championship on home ice.

Patrice Cormier...DONE!!

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Commissioner Gilles Courteau handed down the league's decision today, suspending Patrice Cormier of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs. Where the kid goes from here is now anybody's guess.

Acquired by the Huskies from the Rimouski Oceanic after the World Junior Championship in a significant trade, Cormier suited up for three games with the Huskies before his elbow to the head of Quebec Remparts Mikael Tam effectively ended two junior hockey careers. (Tam may return, but the timeline has not been announced.)

WHL Top 10 Defencemen (Ranked)...

It's the time of year where the crew at Hockey's Future compile various rankings. This month, the projects include ranking the defencemen in each of the major junior leagues across Canada. That is, Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The primary criteria is that the Top 10 ranking includes only those players who have already been drafted by NHL teams.

Brad Ross, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)...

Kelowna hockey fans are in for a treat with the resurgent Portland Winterhawks in town for a Friday night tilt against the Rockets at Prospera Place.

The trio of Brad Ross, Nino Neiderreiter and Ryan Johansen are all eligible for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in June. Neiderreiter and Johansen are WHL rookies while Ross is in his second full season. As a forward line combination, they have been consistent offensive contributors on the much improved Winterhawks, a team that looks like a legitimate threat for a deep playoff run this coming spring. And by the way, the "kids" are not even Portland's first line!

Here are the numbers through Jan. 14:

Ross...22 goals, 27 assists, 49 points, 45 games, +18, 121 pim's

Neiderreiter...25g, 18a, 43p, 39 games, +7, 58 pim's

Johansen...16g, 29a, 45p, 39 games, +9, 27 pim's

Neidereitter was the WHL's rookie scoring leader before he left the 'Hawks in mid-December for the World Junior Championship, where he was outstanding in leading Switzerland to a fourth place finish.

Johansen, who played for the Penticton Vees of the BCHL last season, has been selected to play in the 2010 Top Prospects Game in Windsor, Ontario next week.

Ross, the younger brother of former Regina Pats/Kamloops Blazers/Vancouver Giants defenceman Nick Ross, has been on the outside looking in as far as the Top Prospects Game and international play are concerned. However, all the Lethbridge, Alberta native has done is lead the 'Hawks in both scoring and penalty minutes so far this season.

We spoke with Ross today before the team went for a skate on their off-day in Kelowna.

2010 World Junior Championship Wrap Up...

I spoke with Ken McKenna, the Managing Editor of Hockey's Future, yesterday. Ken did a terrific job of formatting and posting much of my work from the WJC in Saskatoon.

We combined on a final podcast concerning the 2010 WJC, a tournament won by a spirited USA team that edged Team Canada 6-5 in overtime in the gold medal game. We covered a number of topics, from the final game to the performances of some individual prospects.

NOTE: I did make an error during the discussion, identifying Alex Pietrangelo (CDA) and John Carlson (USA) as the only two players at the WJC "who played pro hockey during the first half of the season". WHL Trade Talk: Part Deux...

More thoughts on some of the deadline deals...

To Portland: Luca Sbisa, D; 2010 1st Rd (Import Draft); 2011 5th Rd.
To Lethbridge: Daniel Johnston, D; Jacob Berglund, F; 2010 1st Rd (Import Draft)
**Whenever an import is traded, another is generally involved. In this case, Sbisa joins countryman Nino Neiderreiter, becoming the first all-Swiss pair to skate together with a WHL team. Sbisa played his best hockey in the WHL during the 2008 season with a loaded Hurricanes group that included the likes of Zach Boychuk. (Click here for a feature I wrote on Sbisa and Boychuk while covering the 2008 Top Prospects Game in Edmonton.) Time will tell if Sbisa recovers well enough physically from an abdominal injury suffered at the WJC. Assuming he plays an important role for Switzerland at the Olympics, and then arrives healthy in Portland with energy and motivation, this trade could surely serve to earn the 'Hawks an extra round of playoff success. For the 'Canes, the organization has been busy all season moving players in and out of Lethbridge. Johnston, 17, is a good young defenceman, one of many in Portland this season where the 'Hawks could afford to get a little older in the short-term. Both he and Berglund, 18, should play regularly for the Hurricanes during the second half of the season. Whether or not Berglund remains in North America for next season will probably depend on how Lethbridge can sell him its plans for success for the 2010-2011 season. The teams also switched their Import Draft positions. Based on the likely order of finish in the standings this season, Lethbridge has moved up in the Import Draft and Portland has moved down.

To Prince George: Kyle Jahraus, G.
To Seattle: Robbie Ciolfi, F.
**The Cougars have had terrible luck between the pipes this season, with at least eight different players strapping on the pads. Jahraus, 19, will be the ninth. Injuries and a retirement among the goaltenders have given general manager Dallas Thompson fits. PG simply needs a warm body for the remainder of the season to spell #1 keeper Hudson Stremmel, who is sidelined with a concussion. Jahraus will probably have to be phenomenal to remain in the picture next season. In Ciolfi, the Thunderbirds get a kid who played 25 games this season before some off-ice adventures in Prince George became his undoing. He had been waiting at home in Lethbridge for a few weeks while the Cats tried to arrange a deal to move his rights. PG probably wins this one because they got what they needed immediately in return for a player who had no hope of returning to the Cougars' lineup. Ciolfi, 18, who has also played for the Prince Albert Raiders, has a new lease on his WHL life. His hockey future is most certainly now in his hands.

A look at a few of the trades completed at the WHL trade deadline.

To Brandon: Travis Hamonic, D
To Moose Jaw: Dallas Erhardt, D; 2010 1st Rd; 2010 2nd Rd; 2011 2nd Rd
**The shoulder injury Hamonic, 19, suffered at the WJC should be a non-issue. The Wheat Kings know they will be playing meaningful hockey in May, so there is plenty of time for Hamonic to heal. Realistically, Hamonic should be good to go for at least the last 10-15 regular season games and what will likely be a deep playoff run. Erhardt, 17, can play now in Moose Jaw, but the wealth of bantam draft picks obtained by general manager Jeff Truitt will bear fruit for the Warriors. If MJ uses the draft picks, the club will have to be patient. But if the deal is right, look for Truitt to part with a draft pick to add an established WHLer or two prior to the 2010 draft.

To Saskatoon: Marek Viedensky, F
To Prince George: Tyler Santos, G; 2010 3rd Rd; 2011 3rd Rd (conditional)
**Good for Viedensky, a 19-year-old import forward who played at the WJC in Saskatoon and should fit in well with the Blades. Drafted by San Jose in the 7th round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he is a big-bodied kid who should contribute some secondary scoring with the Blades. This is a nice reward from Dallas Thompson in PG for Viedensky, a trade to an upper echelon team at a time when he is trying to prove his mettle to the Sharks. For PG, a goaltender will help but they will have to wait for Santos, 15. The team has had problems in goal for a variety of reasons, with no less than six keepers in the rotation this season. The draft picks are also of value to the Cougars, enabling the organization to maintain its commitment to building through the bantam draft.

**The veteran bunch that started the season in Kamloops is pretty much gone now as general manager Craig Bonner is dissatisfied with the team's 7th place position in the Western Conference standings. Shattock and Stebner, both 19, and Bubnick, 18, will join former Blazers' defenceman Giffen Nyren, 20, who was dealt a few weeks ago to the Hitmen. These four have got to feel like they've won a lottery, given the likelihood that Calgary will push hard for the Eastern Conference title. In Kamloops, the deal is all about the future, a culture change move that will force new, young leaders to emerge...quickly. Schaber, 18, will be given a chance to play in offensive roles in Kamloops, something that was difficult for him behind veteran forwards in Calgary. Madaisky, 17, in his draft year, is really the key here as the Blazers have added a capable young d-man who will be expected in coming years to do just about everything.

Referees Are Tougher Than You Think...

More than a few observers at the World Junior Championship have noticed one particular linesman working the games with an obvious injury to his right hand. The official is Paul Carnathan from the United States (pictured).

Carnathan was advised in October that he had been identified by USA Hockey to work the WJC in Saskatchewan. Then on Nov. 11, while working an ECHL game in Trenton, New Jersey, a collision between two players resulted in Carnathan suffering a serious injury to his right hand.

We spoke with Carnathan after he worked the bronze medal game between Sweden and Switzerland. His is a story of some determination.

A quick check of the rosters of the 10 teams attending the World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan shows 74 players at the tournament are already property of NHL teams. All were chosen in the 2008 and 2009 NHL Entry Drafts, except for a couple of free agent signings.

Team USA National Junior Team Roster...

USA Hockey Inc. has announced its roster for the WJC in Saskatchewan.

For the first time, a selection camp was held to evaluate players for the current edition of the National Junior Team. The group convened in Grand Forks, North Dakota for the camp.

Of the 22 players named to Team USA, a total of eight play in the Canadian Hockey League. There are five players from the Ontario Hockey League, one from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and two from the Western Hockey League (Luke Walker, Portland Winterhawks and Tyler Johnson, Spokane Chiefs). The remainder come from NCAA schools, the U.S. National U-18 Team, and there is also one player from the American Hockey League. A total of 16 players on the roster have been drafted by NHL teams.

Walker must be a tough kid! In a regular season game against the Everett Silvertips just days prior to the selection camp, he was struck in the face by a puck. He required surgery and there was some doubt as to whether or not he would even attend the selection camp. The entire group need not look any further than Walker for a healthy dose of inspiration.

Team USA will compete in the preliminary round pool with Canada, Switzerland, Slovakia and Latvia. Team USA last won the gold medal at the WJC in 2004.

2010 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game...

There will be little time for hockey afficiandos to rest after the 2010 World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan as one of the CHL's annual showcase events is scheduled for January 19-20 in Windsor, Ontario.

The Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game is an two-day event that features 2010 NHL Entry Draft eligible players from the OHL, QMJHL and WHL. There is a Skills Competition on day one, followed by the game on day two.

Team Canada 6; Sweden 2. News & Notes...

While the outcomes of pre-competition games have been rendered meaningless by many media types, the learning opportunities are tremendous. As Team Canada bolted to a 5-0 lead during the chippy affair with Sweden last night, a number of realities surfaced, a few of which might play a role in the ultimate outcome of the 2010 World Junior Championship.

(Note: NHL Draft status of players in parenthesis)

CANADA: Taylor Hall (2010 NHL Draft Eligible) left the game after 20 minutes with what appears to be a bruised knee. Last year in their pre-competition game against Sweden, Dana Tyrell (Tampa Bay) of the Prince George Cougars saw his WJC dreams and junior hockey career end when he suffered a knee injury. Such are the risks, but Hall's injury is not viewed as serious at this point...Nazim Kadri (Toronto) collected three assists, but a few neutral zone turnovers will have gotten the attention of the coaching staff...Brandon McMillan (Anaheim) showed that his speed will be a factor in all situations, but in a short tournament like the WJC, he is going to have to capitalize on his scoring chances.

Goaltender Jake Allen (St. Louis) stopped 30 of 32 shots, backstopping Team Canada with solid play early in the tilt when Sweden dominated territorial play. The two late goals did not factor in the outcome of the game...Alex Pietrangelo (St. Louis) is the only member of Team Canada to arrive at the WJC directly from the NHL. A member of the gold-medal winning team last year, Pietrangelo was patient and poised with the puck and appears ready to step in as the current edition's leader along the blueline...Patrice Cormier (New Jersey) could find himself in hot water after he delivered an elbow to the head of Swedish forward Anton Rodin (Vancouver) while changing on the fly. The elbow went undetected by the officials and unpenalized, but the IIHF has the latitude to review the hit and mete out subsequent discipline...Attendance at the Brandt Centre in Regina was 6,195.

The Windsor Spitfires have four players on the current Team Canada roster (Hall, Greg Nemisz (Calgary), Ryan Ellis (Nashville), Adam Henrique (New Jersey)). The last time this happened was the 1996 gold-medal winning team when the Kamloops Blazers saw four players (Jarome Iginla, Hnat Domenichelli, Nolan Baumgartner, Jason Holland) make the National Junior Team.

SWEDEN: The Swedes have a total of seven NHL Entry Draft first rounders on their roster. They are Tim Erixon (Calgary), Mattias Tedenby (New Jersey), Magnus Paajarvi Svensson (Edmonton), Oliver Ekman Larsson (Phoenix), David Rundblad (St. Louis), Marcus Johnassen (Washington) and Jacob Josefson (New Jersey)...Sweden's WJC entry does not include first rounders Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay) and Eric Karlsson (Ottawa), both of whom will remain with their respective NHL teams...The fact that NHL teams have chosen to do their early round shopping in Sweden lately confirms skill development has returned to Swedish hockey.

Team Canada has defeated Sweden in the last two WJC gold medal games; 2-1 in overtime in 2008 and 5-1 in 2009. Sweden has not collected a gold medal in this tournament since 1981...Goaltenders Anders Nilsson (6'5, 220) and Jacob Markstrom (6'5, 190) are huge. They cover plenty of the net and with improved play, could give their opponents fits during the tournament...Mattias Tedenby has speed to burn and will be heard from during this WJC. In fact, he is one of three of the New Jersey Devils' last five first-round draft selections that have all come from Sweden (Tedenby, Josefson and Nicklas Bergfors)...Defenceman Adam Larsson is already being touted as a first-round prospect for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Sweden will play its preliminary round games in Regina in the same pool as Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Austria. With only the top three teams advancing to the medal round, a very good hockey team will miss the playoff round...The teams in the other pool, which will play preliminary round games in Saskatoon, includes Canada, the United States, Switzerland, Slovakia and Latvia.

Next action for Team Canada is a pre-competition game in Calgary against Finland on Tuesday night.

Game Day For Team Canada...

The National Junior Team takes on Sweden today at the Brandt Centre in Regina. Game time is 7:00pm CT. According to Rod Pederson's blog, the game is a sellout!

This will be the first of three tune-up tilts for Team Canada, an opportunity for head coach Willi Desjardins and his staff to experiment with line combinations and pairings on defence.

For high-scoring forward Jordan Eberle and defenceman Colten Teubert of the Regina Pats, it should have that "home-game" feeling. Eberle and Teubert, drafted by the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings respectively, are two of six returnees from the group that collected a gold medal last season. They were named as assistant captains on Friday. Patrice Cormier of the Rimouski Oceanic will wear the "C".

In other pre-tournament action today, Slovakia takes on Austria at the Uniplex in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

Brandon McMillan (WHL) Earns Team Canada Roster Spot...

Brandon McMillan of the Kelowna Rockets has earned an opportunity to represent Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan.

The 19-year-old native of Delta, B.C. has battled a foot injury and a brief illness this season, but has rebounded with some stellar play. The Anaheim Ducks third-round selection at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, McMillan is a speedy, versatile forward. An impact player in Kelowna, the 6', 195-pounder has collected nine goals and 21 assists for the Rockets this season in 27 games.

We spoke with McMillan prior to the Rockets' departure on their current six-game road trip through the East Division of the WHL. Midway through the trip, McMillan left the team to attend the National Junior Team selection camp in Regina.

Hockey Canada has announced its National Junior Team for the 2010 World Junior Championship in Saskatchewan. The tournament begins on Dec. 26 and runs through to Jan. 5. Canada is gunning for a sixth consecutive gold medal.

A total of eight WHL players have been named to the roster including...

Forwards: Jordan Eberle (Regina), Brandon Kozun (Calgary), Brandon McMillan (Kelowna), Brayden Schenn (Brandon).

National Junior Team Selection Camp Update...

Prior to selection camp on Dec. 9, I spoke with Al Murray, Hockey Canada's Head Scout.

I asked him about the current group of players in the National Hockey League who are eligible for the National Junior Team. That list includes Tyler Myers (Buffalo Sabres), John Tavares (New York Islanders), Matt Duschene and Ryan O'Reilly (Colorado Avalanche). Luke Schenn (Toronto Maple Leafs), who celebrated his 20th birthday on Nov. 2, is too old now and is no longer eligible.

The only current NHLer made available to Team Canada was Alex Pietrangelo of the St. Louis Blues.

Murray, a Regina resident, also lent some interesting perspectives on the relationship between the CHL teams and Hockey Canada, and the history of the Program of Excellence.

The Rant of One Referee...

Officiating is an interesting bit of work. At the highest level, I find that referees are fun to watch because they have become so well-oiled in their positioning and quickness that to a somewhat trained eye, their abilities are absolutely glaringly obvious.

It takes time, years in fact, and experience to anticipate the play, recognize hot spots and maintain control amidst the mayhem that can occasionally arise. The best of the best do their thing in front of massive crowds, consisting of many individuals who seem to feel that paying admission makes them a seasoned, knowledgeable critic. In reality, these boorish hockey fans are just pathetic.

(What many people fail to comprehend is how difficult it is to watch a hockey game “while you are in motion”. Just think about that for a minute, right about the time you’re positioning that barrel of popcorn on your lap and struggling to find a place to set down that 32oz. soft drink. Yeh, that’s your job for the night, mouthing off you fat bastard.)

On the minor hockey side, the same uneducated, over-emotional spectator exists.

When I took to the ice for a Bantam Tier 3 game between Westside and Kamloops, it was an exciting feeling to be on the ice with a bunch of gung-ho kids. Royal Lepage Place is a nice building, plenty of room and a comfortable place to watch hockey. Going through the pre-game routine associated with the game sheet is pretty straightforward, but really, it’s just so cool to get into the feeling that it’s “game on”!

One thing that Hockey Canada expects these days is for the referee and linesmen to skate over to both benches prior to the game and shake hands with the coaching staffs. It’s a “shared respect” initiative that seems kind of curious to me. Really, the same guys you’re sharing well-wishes with are likely going to ride your ass for the next couple of hours. The handshake? I have to wonder just what’s the bloody point?

Another thing a referee may battle at the minor hockey level is inexperienced help in the timekeeper’s box. These are volunteers and they all have different levels of skill and commitment. Some have done it many times, so their knowledge of game sheets and time clock operation is very, very good. Others struggle with the responsibilities, which ultimately does become the referee’s cross to bear.

Whether I am refereeing or working the lines, I continue to marvel at how quickly the players take on the personality of their coaches. With Hockey Canada allowing up to five staff on the player’s bench during the game, it is just bizarre to hear the interaction between coach and player. When there are three solid coaches and one complete asshole on the bench, the impact on the players is inevitably more on the negative side due to the antics of the bad actor.

Penalty calls almost always seem contentious, especially these days when the standard of enforcement is so different from the way the game was played by many over the age of 25 years old. There also seems to be an expectation from the anal and over-analytical coaches in the game that the most obscure rules in the rulebook be called. If not, well, the officiating staff is totally incompetent. There is just no other explanation!

Hopefully there are coaches out there somewhere who understand the benefits of convincing the players to gut it out and fight through a check? A little bump here or there and many coaches these days hold their arms up in the air as if the kid has been shot by a sniper. Geezuz coach, success on the ice can be just that simple for the player. It's called work ethic!

When a kid enters the penalty box, removes his helmet to wipe of the face-guard and dry off his face, there is always an opposition coach that believes he should be penalized for removing the helmet. Issue a 10-minute misconduct to a player who curses his way to the penalty box and swears at the timekeepers once he gets there, and you have a coach that expects an explanation presented in form of a sworn court document. A kid on the losing side slams the penalty box door with a minute left in a 9-3 drubbing and the coach from the team leading the game wonders why you don’t tack on an unsportsmanlike minor or a misconduct. Where does hockey find these dunces?

Meanwhile, watching the antics of many players at the minor hockey level, especially around the net, borders on comical. The “tough-guy” antics are humorous, a protect-the-goalie mindset that causes nothing but chippy hockey and hassles all night long. And then there’s the kid who scores the ninth goal in a 9-3 victory with less than two minutes remaining and struts around the ice as if he has scored an overtime winner. Boy, there’s a well-coached hockey player.

One thing that is always possible at the minor hockey level is the reality that a referee could lead a parade to the penalty box from the opening faceoff to the end of the game. There are always stick fouls occurring because the players are constantly attempting to gain an edge with out skating. There are the smart asses who insist on stopping inches from the goaltender, close enough to spray snow into the goaltender’s mask. And there are the punk kids who continuously run off with the mouth. It’s just nauseating. I guarantee that I could turn two hours of ice time into a three hour hockey game with my whistle, compliments in part to the finely-tuned young athletes that have not been taught so efficiently by their coaches. But again, what’s the point?

Despite the BS, I’ll lace ‘em up and pull the stripes on again and do the absolute best job I can. While I'm on the ice, I'll also learn from my colleagues and the experiences, and get some much-needed exercise. There will be hard knocks along the way, due to uncontrollable factors and ignorant people. There will also be highlights, like watching some terrific young players, good, clean body contact, and spirited puck battles. There will be many young people who will amaze me with their maturity, despite the antics of the childish adults that surround them at the rink.

And of course there will be tedious days and evenings where an assignment means watching horrible pucks skills and techniques, testimony to the quality of coaching these poor kids have been saddled with.

Yet when all is said and done and everyone leaves the rink, the hapless, egotistical, finger-pointing minor hockey coaches and the screaming, whining, tunnel-visioned parents can always point to the real reason their beloved team absorbed that 9-3 thrashing.

The referee was terrible.

Mike Johnston (WHL) Interview...

After limited success on and off the ice over the past decade, the Portland Winterhawks have emerged this season as a legitimate contender among the WHL's Western Conference teams. Yet the 20-12-0-1 record to date during the current campaign may only be a sign of things to come.

The Winterhawks are among the youngest of WHL teams along the blueline. The club recently acquired 20-year-old rearguard Eric Doyle through a trade with the Swift Current Broncos. Prior to the deal, 18-year-old Brett Ponich was the elder statesman on defence.

We discussed the current group of defencemen with General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston, as well as the NHL Draft eligible players in Portland. The list includes forwards Nino Neiderreiter, Ryan Johansen, Brad Ross and defenceman Troy Rutkowski.

Had Your Heart Ripped Out Lately?

Everyone was standing. Had to be about 46,000 people.

At least that was how it looked from my seat at the 35-yard-line, just nine rows behind the Montreal Alouettes bench. It seemed as if the entire fourth quarter had been played directly in front of me. Everything the Als did right, seemed to happen in that area of the field.

And now, Damon Duval was ready to make contact with the football on the Riders 43-yard-line. I chose to look toward the uprights, to watch the reaction of Jason Armstead, figuring he would only field the football if the kick was wide. But, before the ball even got airborne, I saw the two officials beneath the uprights reach for their flags and let them fly, almost at the same time.

I've seen enough football to know that any flag thrown in that area has absolutely nothing to do with an infraction committed by the kicking team. And so, while some among the Roughrider faithfull began their celebration, I stood with my arms crossed, awaiting the inevitable, impending doom. Indeed, less than two minutes later and after the most bizarre penalty call I could ever imagine, Duval punched the pigskin through the uprights from 33 yards.

Game over.

The jolt I felt made me feel for a second as though Duval's foot had actually made contact with my testicles. I was on my way out of McMahon Stadium immediately. Stunned. Just totally stunned. I still am, even though I've slept twice since the game ended.

Here are a few other thoughts from Grey Cup weekend, a celebration that meant about $50-million tourist dollars for the city of Calgary:

1. Rider Nation - Part One: I have never liked when other sports fans or the media refer to us as "the best fans". I dislike the arrogance associated with any such notion. However, "loyal" is a term I can live with. Perhaps "fiercely loyal" would be more accurate. My loyalty to the football club is as deeply-rooted today as it was yesterday, the day before, and the day before that.

2. The Statistics Tell The Story: The CFL released information during Grey Cup week that indicates 38% of league merchandise purchased involves the Saskatchewan Roughriders brand. I have to ask, what are the other seven teams not doing right?

3. Rider Nation - Part Two: There are some real boneheads who masquerade as Rider fans. I have no qualms with those who choose to stick a watermelon on their, er, melon, but I have no patience and no tolerance for the punks who seem to see a Rider game solely as a reason to get incoherently drunk. The resulting behaviour pisses me off because it demonstrates "Zero Pride", not Rider Pride.

4. My First "Trooper" Concert: Saturday night at "Riderville" in the Telus Convention Centre, Trooper took the stage sometime between my first and last Pilsner. A great bar band for those of us who remember these Canadian rockers from yesteryear.

5. Riderville: Over 2,200 people dressed in a variety of green and white Saskatchewan Roughrider shirts, jerseys, shoes, pants and hats. What a party! Everyone there for the same reason, enjoying each other's company. There is a comaraderie in a room like that, a wonderful feeling that words cannot describe.

6. Montreal 28, Saskatchewan 27: This is excruciating, the worst feeling I have ever experienced at a sporting event in my life. But one has to wonder what it must have been like to watch that game as a supporter of the Alouettes. Had the Riders won on that missed field goal, future hall-of-famers Anthony Calvillo and Canadian receiver Ben Cahoon would be saddled with the residue of a 1-6 record in championship games during the past decade. And Damon Duval, with two shanked punts and that missed field goal would have been beside himself with dejection.

7. A Happy Birthday: Celebrated my 47th birthday at the Grey Cup game on Sunday. Other than the company of a couple great friends and a few free cans of Canadian, the gift I really wanted never did materialze.

8. The Perspective I'll Cling To: Many have heard me ask the question, "would you rather your team win ugly or lose ugly?" Well, I've seen both sides of it, live and in living color! In 2007 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, we won ugly. On Sunday, well, you know...

A Quiet Weekend On The Blog...

After attending the final Subway Series game in Kelowna last night, all will be quiet on the hockey front here this weekend. I managed the drive from Kelowna to Calgary today, the crew arrives from Saskatoon tomorrow, so it is all about Grey Cup festivities.

The one-of-a-kind shoes above will see plenty of action in Cowtown these next couple of days! And, like the 2007 Grey Cup in Toronto, I may find myself wiping a few splashes of Pilsner off them when all is said and done...

Quinton Howden (WHL) Interview...

The Subway Series comes to a conclusion tonight in Kelowna with Team WHL hosting the Russians at Prospera Place. Last night, the teams met in Victoria, B.C. where Team WHL won by a 2-1 count. A total of 13 players watched that game from Kelowna and will be inserted into the lineup tonight for the series finale.

Among them is Quinton Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Oak Bank, Manitoba native impressed during his rookie season last year, collecting 13 goals and 17 assists in 62 games. So far this season, Howden has chipped in with 11 goals and 16 asists in 26 games.

Pegged as one of the WHL's top prospects for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Howden will play an integral role in the success of the Warriors this season and in the near future. We spoke with the 17-year-old forward after the Team WHL morning skate in Kelowna.

Keeping An Eye on What's Really Important...

A friend of mine in Saskatoon lost his son on Monday. It was totally unexpected, although 23-year-old Riley had been kind of ill for a couple of days. A good, clean-cut kid with everything in front of him. It's tragic and it has kind of taken the wind out of our sails as a bunch of 'Rider fans this week.

After I heard the news from another friend from our golfing crew, I called my daughter Ashley, who is now 22. When I heard her voice, I realized that I didn't really have anything to say in the moment. Just to hear her voice for a couple of minutes...

Coincidentally, a story has surfaced in the world of professional hockey that will get a ton of play in the upcoming weeks. It relates to a high-profile father and his 20-year-old son. I don't find the father's reaction fascinating at all, but as a fellow parent I can assure you he is a guy who obviously "gets it". You can link to it right here.

The underlying subject matter does not have anything at all to do with the passing of my friends' son, or their relationship. But to me, it confirms what I believe each of us should be focused on in our role as parents. And it's a role that I know my friend took very seriously.

Traveling from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, home to a burgeoning wine industry and over 100 wineries, can arm one with some inherrent knowledge of wine and the business. Thus, arriving in the Temecula Valley, home to Southern California Wine Country, we were prepared to judge with a somewhat critical eye.

Alas, this is a region that must wind up on your list of vacation destinations. With nearly 40 wineries, seven golf courses and the historic city of Temecula celebrating its 150th anniversary, the region allows you to leave the hustle and bustle of urban life behind.

After a day on the links at the spiffy Temecula Creek Inn, we stopped by the Callaway Winery and Robert Renzoni Vineyards for some wine tasting and chat with the locals.

Temecula Creek Inn...

An interesting day at the Temecula Creek Inn, where we were entertained by general manager Jason Curl and director of golf Curtis Rowe.

I had contacted the facility's public relations people in advance of our trip to the San Diego area and had expressed an interest in playing the golf course. The crew laid out the red carpet, which was a very nice gesture.

(Now, before I go any further, I want to provide a personal philosophical thought here. I have never been impressed by "over-the-top" customer service. I mean the type of patronizing, fawning behaviour that really goes beyond sincerity. However, what does impress me is a commitment to being "consistently above average". This might sound easy to some, and perhaps might come across as too low of a goal, but the reality in my opinion is that it does require commitment.)

It became apparent early on that the entire staff likely to encounter our group had been made aware of our visit. Thankfully, the hostess and our server at the Temet Grill simply went about their business and in the process, they did a great job handling our table of six people. Great food, too...just a terrific start to the day!

The starters and marshals were busy on this day, again, with frost being the culprit. Directing traffic is very challenging under these circumstances. Admittedly, as Canadians, we have some difficulty associating a "frost delay" with golf in the San Diego region, but we've played enough golf in our lives to recognize that needless damage to the playing surfaces makes little sense.

Having said this, and based solely on a one-day experience, I get the impression the crew at the Temecula Creek Inn are a group that really does want to be there. On a wonderful November afternoon, we were able to play the Creek Course and then just five holes on the Oaks Course before we had to depart for a wine tasting set up by the Temecula Visitor and Convention Bureau.

What we did see was a layout in great fall condition. We had learned over breakfast that with three nine-hole courses, the crew at the Temecula Creek Inn had made the decision to begin some overseeding in August. While there is some risk in doing this too early, the result has been noteriety in the region for playing conditions that are a notch above some of the other facilities in the area. It appears that the calculated risk has paid off.

Not "Singing" the Sycuan Resort Praises...

When I played the Willow Glen course at Singing Hills in El Cajon, California a decade ago, it was an absolutely amazing experience. Fast forward ten years, the facility has been renamed the "Sycuan Golf Resort". It continues to boast the Oak Glen and Willow Glen courses and also an 18-hole par-3 course called Pine Glen. It truly is a beautiful property, but I was bitten in the ass by lousy course conditions today, which I did not expect at all.

We booked the Willow Glen course using an online service called http://www.golfnow.com/. The $55 green fee (about a $20 discount) included a powercart and our 7:52am tee time gave us a chance to finish before noon. The game plan for the four of us was to grab lunch afterwards and then play the Pine Glen course, just a leisurely afternoon together to sip a few pops and hit some irons.

Well, the Willow Glen greens were outstanding...cut and rolled and just tremedous. The fairways and tee boxes, however, played like at least two-inch rough! Seriously...probably two inches. We had more trouble finding our golf balls in the fairway than we did when we hit it in the rough! What a colossal letdown, especially at a facility I pumped up to my wife and friends. So much for my "cred"...

In retrospect, their is a learning opportunity here. Call it my "four-step" program to ensure a positive golf experience. Here goes...

1. Check out the golf courses and green fees online at http://www.golfnow.com/, then write down a couple of options that interest you.

2. DO NOT BOOK. Obtain the phone numbers and phone the golf courses first. Ask if there is any course maintenance scheduled for the day you want to play, be it aerating greens or, in the southern USA, any overseeding work.

3. Obtain the name of the person in the golf shop that you have spoken to. (You may need this if you find that you have received any misinformation or, you may wind up speaking with an "all-star".)

4. After speaking with the golf courses, return to the online booking website and confirm your choice and tee time.

At the Sycuan Golf Resort, I checked in at the golf shop about 20 minutes before our tee time, ascertained that the staff were not busy at all, introduced myself and handed over my credit card to pay the green fees for my wife and I. The gentleman who assisted me advised there had been a frost delay (it was 51 degrees Fahrenheit on the exterior temperature guage in our vehicle at 7:30am) said we could tee off right away, and also told me we were the first group on the Willow Glen that day. I asked about the pace of play expectation, never did get a definite answer, and then the fellow advised they did not have a starter on the first tee. He gave me a scorecard and pointed throught the window in the direction of the first hole.

Admittedly, he was friendly and did his job. But really, not much more than what I would call the "the bare necessities". And on that note, I am sure getting sick and tired of golf professionals who aspire through their actions to perform at minimum service levels. You know, if you want to function as nothing more than a "clerk", then just be one and lose the business cards with your organizational affiliation!

There was no, "welcome to El Cajon"! Where are you folks from? How long are you here? Have you played here before? Do you know we have three golf courses? Reading our greens can be tricky...are you interested in any hints? But really, why wouldn't he tell me about the course conditions we were about to experience?

Now, I am a huge proponent of people taking "personal responsibility", so I am willing to accept that in this case, there was a measure of responsibility that was up to me as the consumer. But, we have an online booking service here that did not display its "overseeding" icon. We also have shop staff at the Sycuan Resort that ignored an opportunity to provide course conditions information at check-in. I am left to wonder if this might have anything to do with us booking online at a discounted rate, rather than at the regular rate through the golf shop by telephone?

After a crummy golf experience, due entirely to the "knarly fairway rough", I elected not to speak with anyone in the golf shop afterwards. I would have stopped in at the golf shop after the front nine, but the ninth hole does not return to the clubhouse area. After 4.5 hours, I had effectively developed a pretty negative attitude anyway.

At the end of the day, the Sycuan Resort did lose a $100 lunch and another $120 in green fees on the Pine Glen course. We couldn't get outa there soon enough!

So next time, I will be that "pain-in-the-ass customer" on the phone who will be asking the busy shop staff six or seven detailed questions before I make the commitment to attend their facility. Sorry guys, if you're not going to be proactive and give me the information in advance, you are leaving me no choice but to occupy your valuable time with a bunch of questions that ultimately relate to how I choose to spend my golfing dollar. Case closed...

Historic Torrey Pines...

Home of the 2008 U.S. Open!! I've played the South Course on two occasions, once in 1997 and then again in 2007. It's a very demanding golf course. And today, note the shirt...just bringing some 'Rider Pride to sunny So Cal!! (Click on the image for a larger view)

Made a quick pit stop at Torrey Pines on our way back to San Diego from Huntington Beach, where we were treated to terrific luncheon at Duke's. The pier at Huntington Beach is a famous movie setting.

Surfers aplenty were fun to watch and a couple of dolphins paid a visit as well. The seagulls are absolutely huge and it is amazing to watch how aggressively the pelicans dive into the water to satisfy their hunger.

Next up, spending the day at the Sycuan Golf Resort in El Cajon.

Enjoying Sunny "So Cal"...

Not a hockey rink in sight this week as we're celebrating our anniversary in San Diego. Sunny blue skies and not a hint of the metric system! And yes, there is plenty of golf on the menu.

I'll be blogging this trip in three parts for Inside Golf.ca, using golfnow.com to coordinate golf for our foursome. And, we'll be spending a day at the Temecula Creek Inn GC, nestled in a well known wine tourism region about an hour north of San Diego. It will be interesting to see if these folks have ever investigated the Okanagan Valley wine industry?

Check out this pic from the storied Coronado Municipal Golf Course, perhaps the busiest track in the region. (You can 'click' on it for a larger view) That's the Starter's Booth at the first tee where people line up every morning at 7am in hopes of finding a game. Green fees are $35, everyday, all year long. And the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in the background is just an engineering marvel. Beer, wine and appies only $3 each everyday between 3pm and 7pm. Makes an 11am tee time look pretty good!

Cam Moon (WHL) Red Deer Rebels...

If you were asked to identify the player pictured here, my advice to you would include the suggestion that you locate a long-in-the-tooth fan of the Saskatoon Blades. Indeed, the goaltender is Cam Moon, pictured here during his three-year WHL career a couple of decades ago when he was keeping pucks out of the net for the Prince Albert Raiders, Medicine Hat Tigers and the Blades.

Since then, what appears to be a mullet has in fact vanished, yet Moon remains a highly recognizable ambassador of the WHL. In his role with the Red Deer Rebels, he is continuing to make an indelible mark on the airwaves as one of the most knowledgeable, eloquent, enthusiastic and animated play-by-play men in the league. He also frequently chips in during WHL games televised on Shaw TV.

Last season, the Rebels missed the playoffs, but a silver lining for the organization occurred in June when four players (Landon Ferraro, Justin Weller, Darcy Kuemper & Tommi Kivisto) were selected at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Then a few weeks later, Willie Coetzee earned a contract with the Detroit Red Wings after receiving a free agent tryout. Four of the five have returned to Red Deer this season. We caught up with Moon in Kelowna, where he graciously spent a few minutes chatting about the current edition of the Rebels.

Geoff Smith (WHL) Kamloops Blazers...

When the current WHL season began, many pundits pointed to the Kamloops Blazers as one of the top teams in the Western Conference. With a veteran roster and proven offensive producers, it was suggested the team would be a handful for its rivals in the B.C. Division.

Alas, the inconsistency has led to an early season coaching change and some very definite soul-searching in Blazerville. A disastrous road trip through the Eastern Conference saw the team lose the last five of their six games against East Division teams. Upon their return home, head coach Barry Smith was replaced, but the Blazers were promptly trounced at home in consecutive games by the Chillwack Bruins (7-1) and the Tri City Americans (8-3). The club has rebounded of late, winning two in a row at home over the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Kelowna Rockets.

Scott Ferguson and Geoff Smith (pictured) are currently handling the coaching duties. Both are WHL grads and former NHLers. We spoke with Smith, the Edmonton Oilers second pick in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, at length today about his role and about a few veterans in Kamloops. You can listen to an excerpt below, as Smith talks about defencmen Giffen Nyren and Zak Stebner, goaltender Justin Leclerc, and forward C.J. Stretch.

Dallas Jackson (WHL) Interview...

In what is destined to be a difficult year for the Prince George Cougars, veteran defenceman Dallas Jackson is a 20-year-old the organization knows it can depend on.

We spoke with the native of Edson, Alberta in Kelowna at the team's hotel. The 6'2, 190-pounder missed 11 games this season with a shoulder injury. He has recently returned to the lineup and will be expected to log between 20- and 30- minutes per game. A puck moving defencman, Jackson is a key power play contributor and also understands his role as a mentor of sorts in Prince George. He has also played for the Red Deer Rebels and Regina Pats. During the off-season, he hangs his hat in Edson, working on the grounds crew at the Edson Golf & Country Club.

USA Today Column Strikes A Nerve...

If you happen to know of Justin Bourne, you probably already recognize the young man most certainly has a way with words. You can find a link to Bourne's Blog over on the left side of your screen. Justin is the son of former NHLer and Stanley Cup champion, Bob Bourne, a player I watched during his junior career with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades. I had been monkeying around with my own blog when a member at Shannon Lake turned me on to Bourne's Blog this past season. Strangely, at the time, the member was wearing a yellow hat, so maybe I was destined to become just another curious George? Justin also writes for USA Today, a column called "Other Side of the Glass". Inevitably, penning a subjective column on the broad landscape touched by USA Today will occasionally make one responsible for arousing the audience. And indeed, it happened this week when his informed commentary touched on gay slurs in hockey.

I think it's a good read, interesting stuff, and beyond the delicate issue, also a great way for a writer to make a name for himself. The fallout from his USA Today piece is also educational in itself. Kudos to Justin for taking on the subject.

The Birth of "Rider Pride"...

For those across Canada who have often wondered about the fixation Saskatchewan folk have with their only professional sports franchise, special thanks are due to Rob Vanstone of the Regina Leader Post for reminding us all about the birth of "Rider Pride".

Just last season, I had a pair of golf shoes designed...in fact I'm wearing them right now!

Unlike many of the bandwagon types who cling to their beloved sports teams ONLY during the good times, I will continue to wear my 'colors' whether we win or lose.

Mike Williamson (WHL) Portland Winterhawks...

After a three-year, 236-game playing career with the Portland Winterhawks that ended in 1994, Mike Williamson returned one season later and became a member of the coaching staff. Then, midway through his fifth season as an assistant coach, he was promoted to the head coach position, where he remained until the end of the 2006-2007 season. All tolled, Williamson spent 16 years associated with hockey in Portland, Oregon.

In July of 2007, after a tumultuous, debacle-like season where off-ice distractions were commonplace among those in charge on the business side, Williamson left the organization. The team has since been sold and now ranks among the top two in the WHL standings.

The other team near the top of the heap is the Calgary Hitmen, who during this past off-season, hired Williamson as head coach. (Dave Lowry had moved on to coach in the Calgary Flames' system with the new AHL affiliate, the Abbottsford Heat.) While Williamson has inherited a roster with some high-end talent, a group that finished last season only two wins away from a Memorial Cup berth, he is relishing his return to the WHL.

With expectations always high in the Hitmen camp, Williamson has his charges off to a 12-4 start this season. We spoke with him prior to the game in Kelowna against the Rockets, a 4-1 loss. For many on the Calgary roster, the game was a rematch of last season's WHL Championship Final Series.

Marc Habscheid (WHL) Chilliwack Bruins...

When the Chilliwack Bruins hired Marc Habscheid during the past off-season, they added a head coach and general manager with storied ties to the WHL.

Habscheid was a consistent offensive producer during his playing career with the Saskatoon Blades. He played professionally in the NHL, in Europe, and also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship and the Olympics. His coaching record includes a World Junior Championship gold medal and a Memorial Cup championship with the Kelowna Rockets.

He has also retained his ties to Saskatchewan, where he has been involved with retired LPGA Tour player Nancy Harvey in co-hosting a scholarship fundraising golf tournament in their hometown of Swift Current.

Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres...

When the Buffalo Sabres made Tyler Myers the 12th pick overall at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, it was their amateur scout Kim Gellert (pictured) who gave the Kelowna Rockets' defenceman a quick wink from the floor before heading to the podium.

Gellert, a puckhandling wizard during his own professional hockey days, was one of the Rockets coaches who worked diligently with Myers throughout his stellar WHL career, one that culminated in a WHL Championship and a Memorial Cup appearance.

We spoke with Gellert in Kelowna about Myers' hard work and development so far with the Sabres.

Recently, there has been an influx of coaches returning to junior hockey from the NHL, specifically the likes of Craig Hartsburg (Everett Silvertips) and Marc Habscheid (Chilliwack Bruins).

And it has happened in the broadcast booth as well, with Morley Scott of the Vancouver Giants. Well known for his work beside the Edmonton Oilers Rod Phillips, a Hockey Hall of Fame play-by-play man, the upbeat, fast-talking, Scott is enjoying life in the WHL.

Future Looks Bright for Chris Baryla...

If you're surfing the web this weekend, check out the Nationwide Tour site to stay up to speed on the progress of Vernon, BC's Chris Baryla. And of course, the Golf Channel will televise the Tour Championship this weekend.

Baryla, pictured on the right with his father after winning a tournament at the Kelowna G&CC, enters the event in 19th place on the money list. He will cash a cheque this week, which should be enough for him to earn playing privileges on the PGA Tour for next season.

PGA of BC Gets Down To Business...

I spoke with Brian Butters last week at the annual PGA of BC Trade Show in Penticton.

The annual gathering enables golf professionals and buyers from across the province to view products for the 2010 season. The organization also hosts meetings and presents its slate of annual awards. For a list of the 2009 award winners, click here.

Butters, the PGA of BC Executive Director, is an engaging speaker and a staunch supporter of the organization's programs and Members.

We spoke about a few topics, from economics through 2009, the relocation of the provincial office this year, to opportunities for CPGA Members to play a significant role in golf globally leading up to the 2016 Olympics.
